Phonation types: a cross-linguistic overview

چکیده

Cross-linguistic phonetic studies have yielded several insights into the possible states of the glottis. People can control the glottis so that they produce speech sounds with not only regular voicing vibrations at a range of different pitches, but also harsh, soft, creaky, breathy and a variety of other phonation types. These are controllable variations in the actions of the glottis, not just personal idiosyncratic possibilities or involuntary pathological actions. What appears to be an uncontrollable pathological voice quality for one person might be a necessary part of the set of phonological contrasts for someone else. For example, some American English speakers may have a very breathy voice that is considered to be pathological, while Gujarati speakers need a similar voice quality to distinguish the word /baa|/ meaning ‘outside’ from the word /ba|/ meaning ‘twelve’ (Pandit 1957, Ladefoged 1971). Likewise, an American English speaker may have a very creaky voice quality similar to the one employed by speakers of Jalapa Mazatec to distinguish the word /ja0! / meaning ‘he wears’ from the word /ja! / meaning ‘tree’ (Kirk et al. 1993). As was noted some time ago, one person's voice disorder might be another person's phoneme (Ladefoged 1983).

The Creaky Voice Phonation And The Organisation Of Chinese Discourse

The term voice quality or phonation types often come from studies of pathological speech. In normal speech speakers use different phonation types in some languages for linguistic distinction, prosodically as a boundary signal and in attitudes and emotions. Our paper aims to describe the different phonation types that occur in Standard Chinese TV newscasts and the relationship between creaky voi...

Jaw Cycles and Linguistic Syllables in Adult English

Overview In this chapter, we examine whether ideas from Professor MacNeilage's apply to linguistic syllables in adult speech. The relevant ideas are that jaw movement is independent of segmental articulation, and that the jaw is recruited to help solve the serial order problem for speech. Specifically, MacNeilage argues that in ontogeny and phylogeny speech-like behavior-the production of conso...

The effects of linguistic experience on the perception of phonation

This study investigates the role linguistic experience has on the perception of phonation and acoustic properties that correlate with this perception. Listeners from Gujarati (contrasts breathy versus modal vowels), Spanish (no breathiness) and English (allophonic breathiness) participated in: (1) a similarityrating task, indicating the similarity of modal and/or breathy Mazatec vowels and (2) ...

Prosodic Correlates of Voice Preference in Mandarin Chinese and German: a Cross-linguistic Comparison

To find a pleasant voice for speech synthesis is of vital importance to the system. In this study we investigated the influence of prosodic parameters on voice preference from a cross-linguistic perspective. We conducted two voice preference tests. 24 German and 50 Chinese listeners took part in the first test on German speaker selection; while 25 Chinese and 10 German listeners participated in...

Linguistic Voice Quality

Contrasting phonation types in languages can differ along several acoustic dimensions, depending on whether the contrast involves differences in open quotient, in glottal closing velocity, and in noise excitation/periodicity. Listeners thus potentially have multiple perceptual cues to such contrasts. Two perception experiments, classification and similarity rating, show that listeners from diff...
